FINAL EASSY

Do you like animals? What do you think the relationship between animals and people? Friends, competitor, or enemy? The background "OF MICE AND MAN" novel is the Great Depression in USA. During the Great Depression in 1930, people were hard to live because the cost of living was very expensive and hard to get a job.Through the novel” OF MICE AND MEN”, animals can be connected to the people's life during the American Society. For example, Candy's dog shows the uselessness of people's fate. The white puppy shows that women at that time have no human rights, and the rabbits represent weak people's dream.

First of all, Candy's old dog
represents Candy's uselessness and the people who were the bottom level of American Society. Their fate was been eliminated through a competition of the society. Candy shows the people who were the weakest people during the society like disable people are useless, also have no power. If they don't try to gain their right, they must be killed. For example the quotation, "The old man came slowly into the room, he had his broom in his hand. And at his heels they walked a drag footed sheep dog, gray of muzzle and with pale blind old eyes. The dog struggled lamely to the side of the room and lay down." tells people that Candy's job at that ranch was to feed animals, hear room and some easy works because his old and missing an arm. It is also connected to that old dog, it was very old, useless and smells bad, people in the ranch wanted to kill it. Like the writer describes,” Carlson said,’ Look Candy, this old dog just suffers him all the time. If you were to take him out and shoot him right in the back of the head, he’d never know what hit him.' Candy looked helplessly at him, looked for help from face to face." However at last, Candy wasn't able to protect his dog, Carlson killed it. Candy was very regretted, ”You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn’t no good to himself nor nobody else. When they won’t do nothing like that. I won’t have no place to go, and I can’t get no jobs. I’ll have thirty dollars more coming, time you guys is ready to quit.” Compared this two evidences, people could understand there are many similarities between old Candy and his old dog, both of them were useless and old, and this represents that the weak people's life during American Society was very hard, no job, no insurance, and no rights, on the other was it also shows the dark side of the society.

Second, animals
are connected to the people at American Society also shows on the relationship between white puppy and Curcly's wife. The puppy was killed by Lennie, is like a foreshadowing of Curley's wife's death. For example, Lennie sat in the hay and looked at it for a long time, and then, he put out his huge hand and stroked in clear from one end to the other. And Lennie said softly to the puppy,” Why do you got to get killed? You ain't so little as mice. I didn't bounce you hard." this evidence proves that Lennie was not on purpose to kill that dog. Like Curley's wife, "Lennie's big fingers fell to stroking her hair,” Don’t muss if up." she said. She jerked her head sideways, and Lennie's fingers closed on her hair and hung on.” Let go!” she cried,” You let go!" Lennie was in panic. She screamed and Lennie's other hand closed over her mouth and nose, "Please, don't." he begged. She struggled. Her feet battered on the hay and she writhed to be free, he shook her, and her body flopped like a fish,. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck." Comparing these two evidences, people could easily find that both of the white puppy and Curley's wife were killed because of Lennie's carelessness. That dog foreshadows Curley's wife's death. Their relationship also represents that women at that time had no right, just like a little dog, no power and very weak.

Finally, the rabbit shows
that Lennie's dream also represents people's hope that lived in the bottom of the society during the great depression. At this part, Lennie shows the weak people and the rabbits not only shows the Lennie's dream also response to the bottom people's dream during the society. For example," Lennie spoke craftily, 'tell me like you done before.'
"Tell you what?'
"about the rabbits, come on George ,tell me, please, George ,like you done before."
George went on, “we are gonna get the jack together and we are gonna have a little house and a couple of acres and a cow and some pigs and -----"
"and have rabbits,"
"we will have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we will just say the hell with going to work, and we will build up a fire in the stove and set around it and listen to the rain coming down on the roof!" That was Lennie and George’s wonderful dream, but unfortunately, their dream was broken
because of the Lennie's death. Like the writer describes,” From out of Lennie's head there came a gigantic rabbit. It sat on its haundres in front of him, and it waggled its ears and crinkled its nose at him,’ Tend rabbits?’ You crazy bastard. You ain's fit to lick the boots of no rabbit. You’d forgotten them and let them go hungry. That you'd do. George was sick of you,'said the rabbit,’ He’s goanna beat hell out you and then go away and leave you.’ The rabbit repeated softly over and over,’ He gonna leave you, crazy bastard. He gonna leave you all alone." With those evidences, people know how the rabbit is important to Lennie. He mentioned it again and again. He forgot everything except tending the rabbits. Because the rabbit was gone, it shows their dream was broken. Their dream was to manage their own ranch, only if they had their own ranch ,Lennie could tend his rabbits. On the other hand, rabbit is a symbol of weak people’s dream, but at the end, the rabbit gone, their dream was gone.

In conclusion, all the animals are connected to the people’s fate during the American Society deeply. For example, Candy's old dog shows those useless people, the white puppy shows
that women at that time have no human rights and the rabbit represents weak people's dream.
